Proposed Project: Affordable Homeless Housing Alternatives

Ways to get involved this Fall:

  • Please tell us how you’d like to help!

It all begins with commitment and alignment to AHHA’s vision of safe, warm, dry. Turn passion and experience into decision-making. Many of our past Care-A-Van guests become part of our network who work in service to others. Collectively, our organization has invested nearly ten years and tens of thousands of volunteer hours (4,891 hours in 2022 alone!) in serving the most vulnerable in Humboldt County.

Yet, despite these efforts, with over 1600 homeless individuals in Humboldt County, the need for continued support and service has never been greater. YOUR actions directly and positively impact the poorest in the county.

  • The financial health of our organization post-COVID is in need of resuscitation. This is the greatest challenge for AHHA.

AHHA is a small, grassroots non-profit organization. Our fund development plan incorporates contributions from family foundations, corporate donors, and individuals. We explore all of the possible avenues for revenue we can with our limited resources. AHHA relies heavily on community support and volunteers.

A Capital Campaign for an Opportunity Village is launching soon and we’d love help with tasks like receipts for donations, updating information, and managing events.

  • Help Guide AHHA's Mission By Becoming A Board Member

Between March 2021 through December 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, AHHA’s team experienced tremendous demand for community outreach. We served 7,249 guests with mobile outreach and the Care-A-Van. This included hot meals and 3,564 showers.

We survived COVID. Let’s build an organization capable of thriving and providing real opportunity in Humboldt County.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Housing insecurity is not distributed equally or randomly across communities. These inequities are the result of a long history of systemic marginalization and underinvestment in BIPOC communities. A recent analysis of AHHA’s shower guests showed that 23% identify as BIPOC.

  • BEING HOMELESS SHOULD NOT BE A DEATH SENTENCE

Based on the Humboldt County Coroner’s log for the period between 6/1/2018 and 12/27/2022, the average age of death of an unhoused person is 24.8 years younger than the general population. Due to harsh and inhumane conditions experienced outside without safe, warm, and dry shelter, the average age at death is 54.3 years.

  • SOLUTIONS, NOT SUBSIDIES

AHHA offers a low-barrier option for all people regardless of their race, age, socioeconomic status, sexuality, and/or gender. We will perpetually provide culturally competent and inclusive opportunities to address housing insecurity within Humboldt County, focusing on permanent transitional housing not perpetual subsidies.

  • LET'S CREATE OPPORTUNITY

AHHA is a grassroots organizing movement and, since 2016, a 501(c)(3). We work in solidarity to create opportunities with and for unhoused individuals through consistent advocacy, partnership building, policy change, and direct outreach services. Our strategic focus is to implement an Opportunity Village pilot project by 2026. Please join us in this goal.
